CHAPTER 16

Fancy enjoyed another fabulous night until the dawn with Darius in her arms. She hadn’t imagined Darius as a homebody, but he didn’t want to go out to dinner, he wasn’t hungry, and at her request, he denied allowing her to spend the night at his house. They ordered a vegetarian pizza, and when the pizza arrived, Darius disappeared into the bathroom for fifteen minutes. Consuming two-thirds of the pizza, they watched all three Scary Movie flicks, laughing until their stomachs hurt from those hilarious Wayans brothers. The following morning when Fancy suggested going to breakfast, Darius declined.

Fancy asked, “Well, how about dinner tonight?”

Removing the plastic from his freshly dry-cleaned slacks, Darius said, “Naw, I’d better not make plans. I might have to fly back to L.A. tonight. If I don’t, I’ll come back by.”

“Darius, I’m not the type of woman who wants to stay at home having sex every night without going someplace. So if you want to take me out tonight, call me by noon. If not, I might make other plans.”

Darius slipped his crewneck short-sleeved navy shirt over his head and said, “That’s cool.” Darius kissed Fancy’s lips. “Don’t make any plans, I’ll call you later.”

Escorting Darius to the door, Fancy thought, “He must be crazy if he thinks I’m going to sit around wasting my time waiting for him to decide if he wants to take me out.” Fancy closed the door and then changed the linen on her bed. Glancing at the corner of her living room, Darius’s shoes, jeans, and button-up shirt were still there. Quickly Fancy packed his belongings in a black trash bag and placed the bag inside the closet in the back room where she kept her clothes. Racks of clothes on wheels were situated throughout the room like a miniature department store. No man, including Darius, was making his mark on her without making a commitment.

Tossing her throw pillows onto her loveseat, Fancy paused when her phone rang. “Good, he called soon,” Fancy said before looking at the caller ID. Byron’s name was displayed where Darius’s name should’ve been.

“Good morning, Byron.”

“Good morning to you. What are you doing tonight?”

Fancy hesitated and then said, “Nothing. Why?”

“I have a referral for you. Can I take you out?”

A date would be nice, Fancy thought, asking, “Where?”

“You know me. Don’t ask. You wanna make some money or not? Maybe we can become partners and you can donate a portion of your commission proceeds to my nonprofit for every referral. Besides, I miss you, Fancy.”

Byron was hallucinating if he thought Fancy would agree to give his organization money on his terms. “I need to see you, too,” Fancy said, realizing she’d have to tell Byron about Darius eventually.

“Cool. I’ll pick you up at six. ’Bye.”

Fancy didn’t know why she had agreed to go on a date with Byron minutes after Darius had left her place. Was it necessary for her to go out with Byron? Fancy could’ve told Byron about Darius before she hung up the phone.
